Distilling water takes up too much energy!

Most people are not aware how much energy is needed to distill water.

Distilling water takes a lot of energy.  By a lot I mean really 'a lot'. It takes approximately 6 hours of continuous 600 watts of electricity to produce 1 Gallon of good distilled water, that is 3.6KWh of energy for each gallon of distilled water.

For a family of 5, you may need about 4 - 5 Gallons of drinking water. That means you will use up 18 KWh of electricity everyday and 540 KWh of electricity every month. In Houston, Texas where I live 540 KWh will cost about $60 / month of electricity.

Since I realize this fact, I know appreciate having tap water more... why? because now I understand how water treatment plants can not possibly supply everyone with water as pure as distilled water.  It is simply NOT feasible.

Can you imagine watering your lawn with distilled water? or washing your car with distilled water? It just does not make sense.

Even it the cost of energy was not in consideration the method of transporting the water is another problem. Can you imagine re-contaminating newly distilled through the 100+ years old city pipes? That is going to defeat all the effort to begin with.
